Don't Disturb That Nest: What Auckland Homeowners Need to Know About Wasps
A wasp nest near your home or business is more than an inconvenience. Disturbed colonies can sting repeatedly and aggressively, posing a serious risk to children, pets, and anyone with an allergy. Unlike bees, wasps can sting multiple times without dying, and social species will defend their nest in large numbers if they feel threatened. Auckland and Northland are home to several wasp species, and professional nest treatment is always the safest approach.
What you're likely dealing with
Four species are commonly encountered across North Auckland, each with different nesting habits and risk levels:
Common wasp (12mm, yellow and black with a single black face spot) forms large colonies of up to 15,000 workers. Nests are creamy-brown and typically built underground, in tree hollows, or in ceiling cavities. Extremely aggressive when disturbed
German wasp (13mm, yellow and black with three black face spots) behaves similarly to the common wasp, with colonies also reaching up to 15,000 workers. Nests are grey and found in the same locations. Both species are the most frequently encountered in Auckland homes and gardens
Australian paper wasp (22mm, slender with a narrow waist and brown-tinted wings) forms smaller colonies in exposed locations such as under eaves, along fences, and in tree branches. Nests are inverted cone structures made from wood fibre with distinctive hexagonal cells
Asian paper wasp (up to 25mm, black and yellow) nests in the same exposed locations as the Australian paper wasp. Both paper wasp species will sting repeatedly if the nest is approached
A note on bees
Bees are beneficial insects and we do not treat bee colonies. If you have a honeybee swarm, contact a local beekeeper or the National Beekeepers Association as swarms can usually be relocated safely and at no cost.
When to contact a pest manager
If you've found a nest or are seeing high wasp activity around your property, don't attempt to treat it yourself. Professional treatment locates the nest, applies the appropriate treatment to eliminate the colony, and ensures the job is done safely.
No More Pests provides wasp control across North Auckland, with free on-site assessments and same-week response for active nests.
