Carpet Beetles

The Fabric Pest You Don't See Until It's Too Late
Carpet beetles are one of the most commonly overlooked fabric pests in New Zealand homes, and by the time most people notice them, the damage is already done.
Five introduced species are regularly found across Auckland and Northland: the Black Carpet Beetle, Common Carpet Beetle, Varied Carpet Beetle, Furniture Carpet Beetle, and Fur Beetle. All five are capable of causing significant damage to natural-fibre materials in your home.
The real culprit is the larvae
Adult carpet beetles are harmless, living outdoors and feeding on pollen and nectar. The damage is done by their larvae, sometimes called "woolly bears," which feed on wool, carpet, fur, silk, and felt. Because larvae prefer dark, undisturbed areas such as under heavy furniture, along carpet edges, inside wardrobes, and in stored clothing, infestations often go undetected for months.
What to look for
Check for these warning signs, especially in areas that don't get regular foot traffic or cleaning:
Shed skins, which are bristly brown casings left behind when larvae moult
Fecal pellets, tiny droppings about the size of a grain of salt
Irregular fabric damage in concentrated patches on carpet or clothing, not spread evenly
Adult beetles near windows, as they are attracted to light and often found on windowsills or brought inside on cut flowers
When to contact a pest manager
If you're finding shed skins or unexplained fabric damage, don't wait. Carpet beetle infestations are treatable, but the longer larvae are active the more costly the damage becomes. A professional assessment will identify the species, locate the source, and recommend targeted treatment to protect your carpets, rugs, and stored fabrics going forward.
No More Pests provides carpet beetle control across North Auckland, with free on-site assessments and responses within 24 hours Monday to Friday.
